Before you list it

Why pre-sale car detailing pays for itself

I’m Eman. I get booked for this constantly, usually a few days before someone lists a car — and it is the one job where customers tell me afterwards exactly what it was worth.

A buyer decides how they feel about your car in about ten seconds, long before they look at the service history. A dirty car does not read as “needs a wash” to them. It reads as “not looked after”, and every mark becomes a reason to knock money off. Pre-sale car detailing removes those reasons before anybody gets a chance to use them.

It works on the photos first. Most people find your car on a screen, and a clean car photographs like a different vehicle — the paint has depth instead of haze, the interior looks cared for, the wheels look like the ones in the brochure. More people click, more people message, and you are negotiating from a stronger position before anyone turns up.

Then it works at the viewing. The buyer opens the door, it smells clean, the footwells are dark instead of grey, and the story your advert told turns out to be true. That is when haggling gets shorter — not because they cannot find faults, but because the car has already told them it has been looked after.

What a buyer notices first

In order, from what I see standing next to people looking at cars — and each one is something pre-sale car detailing puts right.

  1. The wheels

Brake dust baked onto alloys makes a car look neglected from across the road. Cleaned properly — including behind the face — they make it look maintained.

  2. The smell

The first thing they do is open a door. A stale car loses the sale in the first breath, and no amount of air freshener hides it from someone who is looking for a reason to offer less.

  3. The footwells and seats

Grey, matted carpet says high mileage even when the clock does not. Shampooed and extracted, it says the opposite.

  4. The paint in daylight

Swirl marks show up on a bright day and read as “machine washed for years”. A polish puts back the depth that makes the colour look right in photographs.

When to book it

Book pre-sale car detailing for the day before you take your photos, not the week before. Cars sitting outside in NW London pick up dust, rain marks and tree sap within days, and you want the photos taken while the paint is at its best.

If you are selling privately, do the photos the same afternoon in daylight. If you are going to a dealer or a buying service, book it for the day before your appointment — their appraiser is walking round it looking for money off, and a car that has clearly been looked after gives them less to work with.

Practically, I need a driveway, an allocated bay or a bit of street outside your house. I bring my own water and power, so nothing comes out of your house and you do not need to be home for all of it.

What pre-sale car detailing will not do

Worth being straight about, because it saves you money.

Stone chips and scratches through the paint. Polishing removes swirls and light marks in the clear coat. Anything you can feel with a fingernail needs a body shop, not a detailer. I will point them out and tell you honestly whether they are worth fixing before you sell — usually they are not.

Dents, kerbed alloys and cracked trim. Different trades. A smart repair specialist will often be cheaper than the money a buyer knocks off, and I am happy to say which ones I would bother with.

Burns, tears and dye-stained leather. Cleaning makes them cleaner. It does not make them disappear.

Everything else — the haze, the grey carpets, the smell, the dull wheels, the film on the dashboard — is exactly what pre-sale car detailing is for, and it is the part buyers actually react to.
